Why Belinda Sanders’ return matters to local radio

Belinda Sanders has spent decades telling stories. Now, after several years away from the microphone, the former ABC journalist is back on air, this time joining 4WK breakfast.

And from my interview with her, it’s pretty clear she didn’t need much convincing. When the opportunity came up, her reaction was simply: “I really want to do this.”

Sanders had moved into marketing and community engagement, but admits she missed being connected to what was happening every day. And, perhaps most importantly, she missed radio.

It’s easy to forget just how valuable that experience can be in local radio. Sanders knows the region. She’s lived there, worked there and reported on it for years. She isn’t walking into 4WK having to learn a community from scratch.

Her journalism background also gives her something every breakfast show needs: the ability to have a conversation rather than simply fill airtime.

As Sanders puts it, the instincts to “listen, ask the next question and tell a good story” never disappeared. There were nerves on that first morning, she admits. But once the conversations started, the instincts came back. And then came the moment that probably sums up her return better than anything else. “Yep. I’ve missed this.”

That’s a pretty good reason to get back behind a microphone.

In an industry obsessed with the next big name, the next big show and the next big ratings result, Sanders’ return is a reminder that sometimes the best thing you can bring to a breakfast show is experience, curiosity and a genuine connection to the community you’re broadcasting to.

Because local radio still needs people who know how to tell a story. And it sounds like Belinda Sanders is ready to tell a few more.
